It was first introduced in support of operations in Kosovo in 1999. Mr. Eriksson was involved in the deployment of IMSMA in Kosovo and finished the mission occupying the post of Chief Information Officer for the United Nations Mine Action Coordination Centre in 2000. Since his deployment in Kosovo, he has been involved in both research and implementation of information management and decision support systems in Sudan, Afghanistan, and Iraq. His past employers include the Swedish Rescue Services Agency, the European Commission, UNOPS, and VVAF/iMMAP.
In 2006 he was awarded a PhD in Disaster management by Coventry University for his research on the use of decision support systems for donor decision-making in the immediate aftermath following sudden onset natural disasters in central Asia.
Mr. Eriksson was introduced to mine action during his Swedish military service as an EOD specialist. After completing his mandatory service in 1997, he volunteered for peace-keeping duty in Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of the battalion EOD platoon. On returning to Sweden he completed his bachelors degree in information systems analysis at Linköping University by writing a thesis on the EOD-IS.
