Per is the Advisor, Operations and Animal Detection Systems and joined the GICHD in June 2011. Per is working with the concepts of using animals such as dogs and rats as detectors within landmine, ERW and cluster clearance and Technical Survey operations. He is responsible for developing and maintaining a thorough understanding of the use of animal detection systems in the Mine Action sector globally and assist national authorities in establishing and maintaining accreditation, test and licensing of operational animal detection systems. The Project also includes the establishment of an animal detection focus group and the organization of annual workshops in order to facilitate exchange of research results, training developments and operational best practices between national authorities and organizations utilizing animal detection systems.

Previous experience :

Per came to the GICHD from the position as the NPA Country Director for Jordan and South-Iraq Mine Action Programmes where he spent 2 years. Prior to this, he worked 9 years in various Head Office, Programme and Operational management positions with NPA in Norway, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ethiopia. Per has also worked for ELS in Northern-Iraq and his first involvement with Mine Action was working for the UNMAC in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1997-98. Before his involvement in Humanitarian Mine Action, he was an officer with the Norwegian Army Rangers and Engineers.
