Ambassador Stephan Husy took office as the Director of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) in June 2008.

Stephan Husy started his career as a diplomat with the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1987. Since then he has acquired a strong background in development cooperation and peace-building activities.

Stephan Husy graduated from the University of Basel’s Faculty of Law. He practised law for a number of years before entering the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). During his first years in this government department, he assumed charge of several portfolios, including international organisations, preparation of the Rio Conference on sustainable development, transborder cooperation and international environmental law. In 1995 he moved to the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in order to lead efforts on cooperation with central Europe and CIS countries. From 2000 he was first in charge of the Swiss human rights policy, and then led the Swiss expert pool on civilian peace-building and the section for peace policy within the Political Directorate. He was responsible for civilian conflict transformation activities in different parts of the world as well as for the human security policy in multilateral fora. In February 2007, the Swiss Government appointed Stephan Husy to the title of Ambassador, and he was seconded to the 30th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent as Commissioner. In addition, he assumed the role of Secretary General during the conference which took place in Geneva from 26-30 November 2007.
