Faiz Paktian joined the GICHD on 1st September 2006. His responsibilities include the continual development and review of the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) and associated Technical Notes for Mine Action (TNMA). He also provides training and advisory services on the application of IMAS to the staff of demining organisations, to mine action centers and to the military.

Faiz Paktian has been involved in humanitarian mine action since 1990. Initially, he started as a field team leader with a mix of responsibilities to conduct technical survey, clearance and monitoring operations in the Mine Action Programme for Afghanistan. He then worked in a variety of positions in the field and at senior manager level in the Afghan programme in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and also in Iraq and Yemen.  He worked for NGOs, commercial demining organisations and the United Nations. Prior to joining the Center, he worked as Chief Technical Advisor for UNDP Mine Action Programme in Yemen. Faiz Paktian holds a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration.
