Since January 2002, Kerry Brinkert has served as the Director of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention Implementation Support Unit (ISU). The ISU was established by the GICHD pursuant to the September 2001 agreement of States Parties to the Convention to create such a unit. The purpose of the ISU is to further enhance the operation and implementation of the Convention.
Kerry's responsibilities include: supporting the work of the Convention's President and Standing Committees; providing communications about the operation and implementation of the Convention; serving as a liaison with actors that are central to the operation of the Convention, including States Parties, the United Nations, the Nobel-laureate International Campaign to Ban Landmines and the International Committee of the Red Cross; and overseeing the development of a documentation and resource facility.
Between 1998 and 2002, Kerry worked for the Mine Action Team of Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade where he served as the Section Head of Research, Policy and Communications.
Kerry's background is in policy analysis, having received a Master of Arts in International Affairs from Ottawa's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Calgary. Prior to commencing with work in the international arena, Kerry worked in the Office of the Premier of the Province of British Columbia and for the Leader of the Official Opposition in the Province of Alberta. Kerry was born and grew up in Greater Vancouver.
