Background

Sandra Velasco joined the Geneva Centre in February 2008. Her responsibilities include ongoing support and advice to countries implementing National Mine Action Standards. 

Sandra’s career in Mine Action followed a number of year’s work within the Government of Colombia working on programmes in social development, poverty alleviation and education.

In 2002 she began working within the Observatorio de Minas Antipersonal in Bogota focusing on Mine Risk Education. She quickly moved to work with Mines Advisory Group as a Community Liaison Manager in Northern Iraq and DR Congo. Following that  she became a Mine Action Editor for Landmine Monitor and a consultant for the GICHD.

Sandra is a Colombian/Venezuelan national and speaks Spanish and  English fluently and has good French and Portuguese.
