BackgroundSharmala joined the GICHD in December 2006 as part of the Linking Mine Action and Development project. Her responsibilities include conducting research on the links between mine action and development, developing guidelines and tools, and providing advice, training and technical assistance to mine-affected countries, donors (eg OECD Development Assistance Committee) and other key actors to enable them to effectively integrate mine action into development ooperation. Sharmala previously worked with Saferworld, a UK-based NGO, advising on civil society capacity-building and training; with Amnesty International as a human rights researcher in their Southern Africa team; and she spent several years in Zimbabwe, where she worked with local human rights and development NGOs. Prior to this, she was based in Ottawa, where she worked for the Canadian Foreign Ministry. Sharmala holds a Master of Arts in Public Administration from Ottawa's Carleton University. |
