BackgroundVera has worked for the GICHD as a consultant since 2003 and became a staff member in 2006. In her functions as evaluation and disarmament specialist, she will be conducting evaluations of mine action programmes worldwide and providing technical advice to conventional arms control conferences. Her duty station is Berlin. Vera has degrees in theater, movie and television science, politics and geography, following which she worked as an editor and a television journalist. Deciding to change her life and do something more meaningful, Vera took two years of technical training and work in Explosive Ordnance Disposal, and then worked as a supervisor, manager, and technical advisor in various mine action programmes around the world. In 2004, she published her autobiography. Vera has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Soroptimist European Peace Award, and (from Sir Paul McCartney) the Adopt-A-Minefield award. |
