The GICHD undertakes research and provides technical assistance in the field of mine clearance and technology. This includes a range of topics, including survey techniques, detection methods, clearance techniques, destruction of mines, and quality control. Studies are conducted into manual mine clearance methods, the use of vapour detectors, such as dogs, rats, etc, as well as into all aspects of the use of machines for vegetation cutting, area reduction or clearance. This work results in the production of IMAS, guide books and training workshops. In the area of technology, the GICHD acts as an interface between the field and the research and development agencies. Emphasis is placed on helping the spread of knowledge and best practice with regards to technology among mine affected countries.
