National Mine Action Strategies and Multi-Year Plans

The primary responsibility for taking action against landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) rests with the affected States and populations. Within this framework, the most important task of the GICHD is to support ongoing and emerging mine action operations.

The GICHD focuses on all aspects of mine action, including: mine clearance (including planning, survey, mapping and marking), mine risk education, victim assistance, stockpile destruction and advocacy for a total ban on anti-personnel landmines.

The work of the GICHD is based on a wide range of partnerships with governments, the United Nations (UNMAS, UNDP, UNICEF, UNOPS, ODA), international and national non-governmental organisations and research institutions.

The GICHD provides instruments and services to assist mine action programmes, such as: information management (IMSMA), development of international standards (IMAS), preparing training packages, conducting evaluations and making expertise available to the field.
