The GICHD is mid way through a project called Land Release and Risk Management. The aim is to allow faster land release by use of risk management principles. One output will be a set of generic risk management models that can be tailored to the needs of each country. The GICHD is prepared to help governments and mine action operators to develop national or local risk management models in the future. It is envisaged that these training and advisory services will require fairly long term commitments on the part of the GICHD in each case. Services we may offer include:

  • An initial assessment of the situation on the ground, including a detailed analysis of the capacities operating in a country and aspects related to the scope of the mine problem; the effect that these mines/UXO have on local society and the country as a whole; a hazard assessment and an analysis of those aspects related to local conditions (vegetation, soil properties, patterns
related to past use of mines etc)
  • Training and advisory services for local authorities and demining organisations in the country to determine the needs for land release models and risk management
  • The development of generic land release and risk management models through discussions and workshops to reach agreement on the principles of the models; the values to be used and the overall implementation
  • Monitoring the implementation of land release and risk management models.
