The GICHD Metal Detectors and PPE Catalogue 2007 provides a comprehensive directory of detectors and personal protective equipment (PPE) under one cover.

A brief summary of the “Results of STEMD trials” (conducted in Laos 2004, Mozambique 2005 and Croatia 2006) is included as Annex 1. Some amendments have been incorporated in this annex since the first publication. The latest and accurate version is available exclusively on this website. Also included as Annex 2 is an article on guidelines for purchasing a detector.

Currently, no standard test system exists for demonstrating the effectiveness of particular items of PPE. To address this issue, a European Standards Committee (CEN) Workshop of implementer and manufacturer representatives was due to publish an industry workshop agreement in late 2006. An article about the workshop agreement process is included as Annex 3.

There are relatively few independent performance tests on metal detectors, dual sensors and PPE but those interested in detectors and PPE that have undergone tests should either contact manufacturers directly, or refer to the ITEP website: www.itep.ws.

This catalogue provides information on most detectors currently available to the humanitarian mine clearance market. Not all manufacturers have contributed to the Catalogue. Some that did contribute were unable to provide sufficient information about their product to be included in the publication. Therefore, a number of metal detectors being used in the field are not featured.

Ground and field conditions vary considerably. Good metal detection capabilities are essential for deminers. Discrimination between landmines and mineralised soil is equally important. Tough field conditions in mine-affected countries — areas where basic infrastructure is typically poor — determine that detectors should be robust and easy to handle and repair. These key issues have all been addressed in this catalogue.

The Catalogue features a chapter on personal protective equipment (PPE). Once again, not all manufacturers of PPE used in humanitarian demining are featured here. Currently, no standard test system exists for demonstrating the effectiveness for a particular item of P
