ProjectQinetiQ Portable Humanitarian Mine DetectorThe Portable Humanitarian Mine Detector (PHMD) was developed by QinetiQ (UK), funded by United Kingdom Treasury Capital Modernisation Fund, sponsored by UK Ministry of Defence and Department for International Development, to meet humanitarian demining needs for hand held application. The main idea behind the PHMD was the nearly the same as for the MINETECT project. The basic background information can be found on the QinetiQ homepage for the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. Unfortunately no other actual data can be found there. (as of April 2004) The main goal was the development of a prototype for a cost-effective multi-sensor mine detector using combined ground penetrating radar (GPR) and metal detector (MD) working principles. The GPR component was of QinetiQ origin and the MD one was a MD8 type from the subcontractor GUARTEL (UK). No details for the device parameters are available for public use. With a further funding a number of prototypes and mock up systems were produced and field tested 2003 under a contract with the DFID within the frame work of the ITEP. Following the conclusions of these tests further development work is needed before a decision for the production can be made. At this time no clear information about maturity can be given.
