STEP is a tentative program to establish guidelines for an objective and systematic T&E of Mine Detection Systems against a specific Statements Of Requirements (SOR). This initial trial will model most metal detectors in order to predict their detection performances. This modelling effort constitutes the first phase of a systematic program aiming at evaluating mine detection systems through a limited set of experimental data and a good understanding of the detection physics. The prediction will be systematically evaluated by comparing with measurements performed on real targets in real soil during IPPTC.
