The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) hosted a Remote Explosives Scent Tracing (REST) conference in Geneva. There were presentations by scientists, researchers, and operators from mine action programmes.
The objective of the workshop was to finalise and share the knowledge gained through the GICHD-sponsored REST research programme, and it allowed participants to discuss future applications of REST.
The GICHD has since published, with the contributions of specialised authors, a document providing a valuable summary of the historical perspectives and empirical results gained from the research programme.

The GICHD and its partners - the Norwegian Military Defense Research Establishment (FFI), the Norwegian Military Dog Training Centre (FHSK), Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), and Fjellanger Dog Training Academy (FDTA) - organised a conference that brought together practitioners and experts involved with animal detector systems, in particular in regard to humanitarian demining.
The purpose of this unique and unprecedented meeting was to encourage those with specialist knowledge in this area to share their expertise. End-users, such as humanitarian demining administrators, police, customs, defence specialists and search and rescue organisations were also represented. They discussed their practical experiences and contributed views on how animal-detector systems can best meet their requirements.
