REST is a system whereby air is sampled from mine suspected areas, to be later analysed by specially trained sniffer dogs (rats or vapour detectors are also under development). The study aims to facilitate the development of optimised filters and sampling machines, optimised procedures for the use of the equipment and optimised analysis methods (rats and dogs). The vapour sampling and analysis system is faster and more cost effective than any other known demining method. Increased use of the technology will therefore add value to the international community by increasing the speed and cost-effectiveness of clearance.
The sub-study investigated whether the system can be applied for verification of mine suspected areas (area reduction), not merely for linear targets such as roads.
