Information gathering, and a search of existing relevant literature, are the necessary precursors of a programme to examine and provide standards for mine dog clearance. Much research has already been done on the detection of chemical substances using dogs, some of which may be relevant and useful. A major problem, however, is that this work has been undertaken with little co-ordination. Worse, there has been a lack of documentation of past and present mine dog programmes. Knowledge from previous research projects and demining operations may be available, but until now reports and evaluations have not been widely distributed to the demining community.

NOKSH has compiled a CD for the GICHD with historic references on environmental factors. The CD is a database with more that 300 articles and summaries. Some unpublished or "grey literature" reports that are not readily available have been included in full. The full reference is provided for published articles and summaries are included for most.
