The GICHD Mechanical Demining Handbook will be published in late 2008 and is designed to be a practical, easy-to-use reference manual for field practitioners and others interested in mechanical demining.
The Handbook will contain the following
- advisory notes on machine categories
- systems characteristics
- common tasks such as ground preparation
- vegetation cutting
- mechanical clearance.
The Handbook will also cover
- residual hazards
- environmental impact
- the use of magnets
- contracting
- logistical support.
The Handbook will be accompanied by a number of checklists for easy reference to support operators in the field. In addition the Handbook will contain a selection model to assist those planning to acquire mechanical demining machines.
