The GICHD Mechanical Demining Handbook will be published in late 2008 and is designed to be a practical, easy-to-use reference manual for field practitioners and others interested in mechanical demining.

The Handbook will contain the following

  • advisory notes on machine categories
  • systems characteristics
  • common tasks such as ground preparation
  • vegetation cutting
  • mechanical clearance.

The Handbook will also cover

  • residual hazards
  • environmental impact
  • the use of magnets
  • contracting
  • logistical support.

The Handbook will be accompanied by a number of checklists for easy reference to support operators in the field. In addition the Handbook will contain a selection model to assist those planning to acquire mechanical demining machines.
