What is the procedure for requesting training and / or advisory services?

How much do the training and advisory services cost?
The GICHD tries to make its services as accessible as possible and to offer them at no charge, or at greatly reduced cost. This is obviously affected by the availability of funding, timing and specific need. Costs incurred by the GICHD are generally covered by the Centre, and include expense items such as trainers / advisors’ fees, air fare and accommodation, and training material. Extensive training packages are expensive and therefore, in certain circumstances, the Centre may ask the requesting agency to cover some or all of the costs.

In the case of training, in-country costs (participants’ expenses such as accommodation and per diem and ‘classroom’ costs such as the rental of training room, coffee breaks and lunch) are normally covered by the requesting agency.

Who is eligible for training and advisory services?
Training and advisory services are available to any government, mine action organisation or other institution that is involved in mine action. With respect to services provided by the Implementation Support Unit of the Centre, a priority is placed on servicing the needs of the States Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

How can I find out more about the content of the training or scope of the advisory services?
This training and advisory services brochure provides you with a brief overview of the services available from the GICHD. For more detailed information, associated reading is referenced where available. Those reading materials available on the Publications page of our website are indicated with an asterisk*. Publications not available online can be obtained from the Centre upon request. If you are unable to find the information you are looking for, please contact the person listed in this brochure as responsible for the specific services.

In what languages are the publications available?
Our publications are being translated into an increasing number of languages. Please visit the Publications page to check which languages are currently available.

In what language are the training and advisory services provided?
The services are generally delivered in English, but can be provided in other languages as well (topic dependent). The Centre will support the use of interpreters if the trainers / advisors are unable to speak the required language. If needed, the Centre will support the translation of training materials.

Where can I find the training schedule?
The Centre does not conduct regularly scheduled training courses, but provides training on request and on a “firstcome, first-served” basis. Preference will be given to programmes that are committed to improving performance and are requesting training as part of an overall strategy for capacity development.

What training methods are used?
The various training activities are largely participatory in nature, making minimal use of formal presentations. They can be designed in close collaboration with the requesting organisation.Most of our training programmes can be shortened and lengthened, and topics can be combined to fit the client’s needs.

Where is training organized?
Training courses are usually conducted at national or regional level, but can be conducted in Geneva or in a major city in a mine- or ERW-affected country. IMSMA training modules 1 and 2 are delivered in Geneva.
