The mine action field has developed ways and means of building the individual and basic organisational capacities required to deliver mine action services. Supporting the development of the ‘high level’ capacities required if the network of organisations within a national mine action programme is to operate in a wellcoordinated fashion, and for the national programme to provide effective support to a country’s broader development effort, is a greater challenge, particularly in countries in – or emerging from – conflict. The GICHD has conducted many studies on capacity development and has a global perspective of what has worked in which situations. Drawing on this experience, we will be offering a range of services to assist national mine action managers and technical advisors through:
- Assessments of what ‘high level’ capacities will be required over time
- Incorporating capacity development requirements within national mine action strategies and plans
- Training and advisory services to introduce the tools needed to assess ‘high level’ capacity requirements, formulate capacity development plans, and monitor the development of local capacities.
