The GICHD’s mechanical demining systems team works to increase and improve the effectiveness of mechanical systems in humanitarian demining. The team conducts bespoke training courses and workshops and provides operational support, including mechanical evaluations for demining operators and national mine action authorities in mine-affected countries. It participates and advises during mechanical systems testing and bridges the gap between operators, researchers, development institutions, manufacturers, national authorities and donors of mechanical demining systems. It also assists UNMAS in developing and maintaining the IMAS series on mechanical demining and contributes to the GICHD’s publications and work related to land release. During 2012 and 2013, the section is continuing to focus on training activities and on offering advice to field operators. The GICHD Tool for Management of Demining Operations will be further developed and distributed to mechanical demining operators in the field. The tool now incorporates a GPS functionality for tracking and recording mechanical operations.
