Two busy days of bilateral meetings, plenary sessions and side events gathering nearly 300 representatives of government, international and non-governmental organisations engaged to achieving the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention's promise.

Alongside Ambassador Suraya Dalil of Afghanistan, President of the Seventeenth Meeting of the States Parties, GICHD Director Stefano Toscano addressed delegates during the Meeting's open.

"Recent developments in our field," he stated, "marked by new contamination and a sharp increase in victims, show us that the need for efficient and effective mine action remains intact and that our work is as significant as ever. In this context, safeguarding and upholding existing norms such as those set by the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention bear ever more importance. The Convention is a benchmark treaty in both the humanitarian and disarmament fields. It has over the years yielded concrete positive results for the affected countries and their communities. It is thus crucial that our common engagement towards the Convention stays at the heart of our activities."

In addition to participating during the Meeting's plenary sessions, the GICHD also hosted a side event on the first day of the ISM.

The event "Visualization of standardized data through global dashboards for mine action" demonstrated how standardizing a common set of data requirements from mine action programs will ensure programs abilities to fulfill reporting obligations. The speakers at the event also emphasized how visualisation also allows for an analysis of mine action data on a global level.
