
John Sörbö joined the GICHD in December 2022 as an Advisor on National Mine Action Standards (NMAS). He promotes improved NMAS and supports national authorities and stakeholders in ensuring their NMAS are conforming with the International Mine Action Standards and the industry’s good practices. As a member of the Standards and Operations Division, John collaborates with other divisions within the GICHD to ensure that Land Release, Risk Management, Quality Management, and other aspects of IMAS are well integrated within national programs.
Prior to joining GICHD, John Sörbö worked for more than 17 years in the field of humanitarian disarmament with APOPO, DDG, ICRC, IFRC, NPA and Armor Group Mine Action, during which he gained extensive experience in mine action, weapon contamination, security and safety work in conflict and post-conflict areas.
John is a former Captain from the Norwegian Army, holds a bachelor’s in social sciences with a major in African Studies from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and is a graduate from ICRC Leadership and Management School, a post graduate programme in Humanitarian Leadership from ICRC & University of Lucerne, Switzerland. He is EOD IMAS Level 3 qualified.
