Sonia Pezier joined the GICHD in October 2021 and holds the position of Advisor, International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) Outreach and Training, within the Standards and Operations Division. In this role, she is promoting the IMAS to advance their adoption and application within the mine action programmes. This includes collaborating with mine action stakeholders both at the national and international level to facilitate knowledge sharing by developing training materials for online and face to face training workshops, organizing and delivering training, and developing outreach materials and publications.
Prior to joining the GICHD, Sonia worked over 10 years in the mine action sector, including 7 years posted in the following explosive ordnance (EO) affected countries: Laos, Palestine, Mali, Lebanon and Syria. She worked mainly with the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and started her career with Geneva Call, the Gender and Mine Action Programme as well as Humanity and Inclusion. Her last position was with the UNMAS Syria Response Programme in Damascus, where she was leading the EO Risk Education (EORE) project.
Sonia’s academic background includes a MA in International Humanitarian Law and Humanitarian Assistance from the Aix Marseille University, France, and a BA in Political Affairs from Lyon 2 University, France. She holds an EOD level two qualification.
