In business, management is often the factor that enables thousands of people with different skills and knowledge to achieve a common goal. Good management makes people’s strength effective and compensates for their weaknesses. It fosters continual capacity development and innovation on several levels:

  • the individual
  • work unit
  • organisational 
  • community

Senior managers should focus on long-term goals and the strategy to get there, rather than on committing to what is immediately achievable but without strategic importance.

Quality management systems are tools and methods for formally structuring the organisation around qualities of the product, as defined by customer satisfaction. Because the client and beneficiary are not always the same in the not-for-profit sector, the concept of customer is vague. Results-based management emphasises the importance of methods tailored for the type of objectives pursued in the not-for-profit sector.

Information management provides management with the evidence needed to make informed decisions. It enables quality and results-based management systems and informs management on progress according to pre-set indicators such as:

  • performance targets
  • progress
  • remaining work
  • outcomes
  • how a positive impact can be made more likely

It highlights success and areas of concern in terms of productivity, effectiveness or efficiency.
