Respond to the needs of community. The course is designed to improve non-technical survey (NTS) processes in your organisation.
Aim
The course aims to provide field staff involved in NTS with the skills needed to carry out effective NTS operations: to identify, gather, analyse and record evidence of contamination.
What you will learn?
The course strengthens participants’ capacity to:
- Describe the Land Release process in line with IMAS.
- Understand coordinate systems and produce sketch maps.
- Use appropriate NTS tools and community engagement methods.
- Apply gender and diversity considerations and conduct effective interviews.
- Identify basic types of explosive ordnance.
- Classify evidence by type, nature, confidence and source reliability.
- Apply the NTS process in a realistic field exercise.
Who should attend?
- Staff from national mine action programmes;
- Staff from humanitarian demining operators.
- Preference will be given to individuals responsible for the management and conduct of field based surveys or involved in the training of personnel for NTS
Mandatory e-learning courses to complete
Selected participants are required to complete the following GICHD e-learning courses:
- Introduction to gender and diversity in mine action e-learning course
- Introduction to explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) essentials e-learning course
Language level requirements
Participants should be able communicate and present on their national standards in English. The following standards of proficiency in English should be met (as described in STANAG 6001).
- Listening: good | 3
- Speaking: fair | 2
- Reading: fair | 2
- Writing: elementary | 1
Language requirements are compulsory and should be confirmed by applicants’ superiors.
Equipment requirements
Participants will be familiarized with various survey tools and equipment, such as GPS devices, laser range finders,compasses, mapping software, and data collection forms.
The GICHD will provide the equipment required for the training, however, participants are encouraged to bring their laptops with Google Earth and Basecamp software installed and their own field tools (GPS, compass, etc.).
Teaching approach
Interactive classroom teaching, practical exercises, case studies, role play and the use of the relevant tools and apps.
Assessment
- Individual performance evaluation during the exercises;
- Written tests;
- Field exercises;
- A test of basic recognition of explosive ordnance;
- Submission, six months after completion of the course, of an action plan to implement the new knowledge and skills acquired.
