Non-Technical Survey (NTS) is a cornerstone of the Land Release (LR) process and represents the first operational step in determining the nature and extent of contamination. By gathering and analyzing information, NTS provides the evidence base required to classify areas and guide subsequent mine action activities. The accuracy and quality of information collected during NTS directly shape decision-making, ensuring that Technical Survey (TS) and clearance operations are targeted, efficient, and cost-effective.
Aim
This course equips NTS practitioners in Ukraine with the knowledge, practical skills, and attitudes required to conduct high-quality NTS in line with standards, thereby enhancing the quality and consistency of this critical activity across all accredited organizations.
What you will learn?
The course strengthens participants’ capacity to:
- Explain the principles of Land Release (LR) and Non-Technical Survey (NTS) in line with IMAS and contextualize their application in Ukraine.
- Describe basic mine-laying tactics and recognize different types of Explosive Ordnance (EO), analyzing their implications for the LR process.
- Apply NTS tools and techniques, including preparing sketch maps, using GPS, compass bearings (including back bearings), Laser Range Finder (LRF) distance measurement, and Ground Sign Awareness (GSA).
- Demonstrate effective community engagement, including inclusive interview techniques, and apply triangulation of information to assess findings.
- Differentiate between direct and indirect evidence of EO and explain how such evidence informs NTS reporting.
- Critically review NTS forms, process maps, and reporting requirements to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Explain security considerations relevant to NTS operations.
- Conduct and successfully report the results of a complete NTS exercise in a simulated operational environment.
Who should attend?
This training course has been designed for NTS practitioners and/or future practitioners in Ukraine that to be deployed within NTS teams. The training will involve up to 22 participants from national mine action authorities and mine action organization active in Non-Technical Survey operations in Ukraine.
Equipment requirements
Participants will be familiarized with various survey tools and equipment, such as GPS devices, laser range finders, compasses, mapping software, and data collection forms. The GICHD will provide the equipment required for the training, however, participants are encouraged to bring their laptops with Google Earth and Basecamp software installed and their own field tools (GPS, compass, etc.).
Teaching approach
The course entails both theoretical and practical elements, with a focus on evidence–based approaches to NTS in Ukraine. The training has been designed to be conducted partially in a classroom and partially in field areas that emulate the geography and characteristics of Ukraine to provide the scenario-based exercise experience as close to reality as possible.
Currently, no training sessions have been scheduled. Subscribe to GICHD news alerts below to receive updates on new courses.
