The GICHD co-hosted the 8th Mine Action Technology Workshop with UNMAS in Geneva, Switzerland, from 2 - 4 November 2021. Over the course of 3 days, we received 203 participants from more than 38 countries, with 20 exhibitors, and 49 presentations.

This year’s workshop focused on the themes of Land Release, Information Management Systems, and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education. The Workshop was underpinned by a focus on how innovations and technologies speed up the implementation of land release processes and activities in a safe manner and with a high confidence in the product.

The presentations included real use cases of how technology can help involve wider participation of mine affected populations, how Mechanical Systems can replace, to an extent, manual work, how Explosive Ordnance Risk Education messaging can be delivered in a more effective manner that will encourage behaviour change, or how Remote Sensing, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence can be used not only for more efficient recognition/detection of items but also for finding other types of evidence of contamination, making the use of technology more effective.
